TO IDENTI-FLAKE OR IDENT-FLEX?
And you might be wondering, “What is that, you ask?!” Well, it is quite possible that your intuitive mind had already grasped the fact that these terms are derived from the root word: IDENTITY. If you had already come to that realization (which, indeed, you did!), then bravo to you! Now, let’s delve a little deeper into the intriguing aspects of the concept of identity. The question at hand is whether we should be open to embracing a more flexible sense of self (identiflex) or remain within the confines of rigid societal expectations (identiflake).
Throughout human history, the notion of identity has evolved significantly. In ancient times, identity primarily revolved around group affiliation, serving as a means to ensure the collective survival of communities. As humans gradually developed their linguistic capabilities, visual cues and behavioral patterns played a crucial role in distinguishing oneself and fostering cohesion within tribes or ethnic groups. Fast forward to the present day, the significance of individual identity has become widely recognized, thanks to the remarkable rise of individualism. While the imperative of establishing a recognizable identity remains vital for survival, the concept of personal identity has evolved into a cherished aspect of modern society.

In today’s world, it is absolutely essential for individuals to embrace and celebrate their unique and distinctive qualities. Rather than conforming to predefined notions, people are actively seeking recognition for their individual attributes. It is high time that we shift our focus from superficial aspects of our personalities to truly acknowledging and valuing the qualities that make us who we are. While society may have conditioned us to prioritize certain traits, we must remember that we all share numerous commonalities, regardless of our backgrounds or circumstances. A shared desire for acceptance unites us all, and it is important to recognize and capitalize on this collective longing. By embracing our individuality and fostering an inclusive environment, we can create a society that celebrates and uplifts each and every one of us.
Developing our sense of identity is a multifaceted process, influenced by both internal and external factors. On one hand, our individualism arises from our innate quest for recognition, purpose, self-expression, and the magnetic pull to connect with others who resonate with our values and aspirations. On the other hand, our sense of identity is also shaped by the communal bonds we form, as we seek safety, preserve our genetic heritage through family ties, and harness the collective power that comes from being part of a unified group.
While it may appear that these two aspects of identity formation are distinct, they are profoundly interconnected. In fact, the communal influences on our individual identities are vital, providing a foundation and support system from which we can explore and express our unique selves. It is through the nurturing environment of a caring family and accepting community that our individuality can truly flourish. Without such a solid base, the full development of our personal identities would be significantly hindered.
The LGBTQI community serves as a prime example of how individuals can develop a unique outward identity that aligns with their internal preferences. Upon receiving acceptance from their families or finding a like-minded community, many individuals within these groups are able to fully embrace their individuality. It is worth pondering whether their sense of self aided in finding their community or if their chosen community helped them discover their true identity. While there may not be a definitive answer to this question, it is evident that the interplay between society-influenced and personally-derived identities plays a crucial role in enabling individuals to lead fulfilling lives according to their own desires.
Identity is not set in stone. It is a dynamic and ever-evolving aspect of ourselves. While there are certain aspects of our identity that may be unchangeable, there are others that we have the power to modify as needed. The ability to adapt and mold our identity to meet our needs is key to our personal growth and success. Those who remain insecure or try too hard to prove themselves based on societal expectations may find it challenging to navigate through life’s obstacles. On the other hand, those who confidently embrace the flexibility of their identities are more likely to thrive and achieve great things.
When an individual strongly holds onto their societally conferred identity, it can unintentionally signal a sense of separation, as if saying, “I am not like you.” And when someone feels distinctly different from others, it can sometimes affect their chances of acceptance and experiencing the benefits of belonging. Let’s acknowledge the reality that differences can sometimes create challenges in interpersonal relationships, whereas similarities often foster better understanding. Although we strive for coexistence and acceptance in today’s society, we are still keenly aware of the differences that set us apart. On the other hand, when a person can embrace and embody the acceptable identity of a community they wish to belong to, they often find a warm reception. Like anyone, people feel flattered and connected when they encounter someone who strives to align with their values and aspirations. This promotes unity and opens doors to make shared dreams a reality.

As we journey through life and navigate various professional spheres, our identity has the remarkable ability to transform and adapt. The same persona that thrives in one work environment may undergo a metamorphosis in a new setting. But does this malleability imply that we relinquish our true essence? Absolutely not. Rather, it showcases our astuteness in recognizing what suits each unique workplace, allowing us to bring forth the most authentic and effective version of ourselves.
It takes a strong sense of security in ourselves and a high level of agreeableness to understand how flexing one’s identity is a strategy that wins!
