If you could un-invent something, what would it be?
Why are we defined by and limited to our places of birth as if we have the choice of where we want to be born? And so if I could un-invent something, it would be international passports and visas.
The power dynamics of international passports and visas play a significant role in shaping global mobility and access to opportunities. However, I also understand that “uninventing” these power dynamics is a complex and multifaceted issue that requires addressing various factors.
Here are a few potential approaches that would make a huge difference for everyone:
- Promoting Global Citizenship: Encouraging the idea of global citizenship can help reduce the emphasis on national identity and borders. This involves fostering a sense of shared responsibility and promoting equal rights and opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their nationality.
- Reducing Visa Restrictions: Governments can work towards reducing visa restrictions and simplifying the visa application process. This could involve implementing visa-free travel agreements, expanding visa waiver programs, and streamlining visa application procedures to make them more accessible and less discriminatory.
- Addressing Economic Disparities: Tackling economic disparities between countries can help reduce the power dynamics associated with passports and visas. This could involve promoting fair trade, providing development aid to less developed countries, and fostering economic cooperation and investment in underprivileged regions.
- Strengthening International Cooperation: Enhancing international cooperation and dialogue can lead to more inclusive and equitable policies regarding passports and visas. This could involve multilateral agreements and organizations that aim to promote fair and transparent immigration policies.

While “uninventing” the power dynamics of international passports and visas may be a far-fetched fantasy, I strongly believe that by implementing these approaches and fostering a more inclusive and equitable global system, we can work towards reducing the disparities and power imbalances associated with passports and visas.
