Reviewing goals For Personal Progress
Over the weekend, I varied my work station at home and ended up reviewing goals that I’d set for the year because I stumbled upon my book of goals for the year nestled on the table in that work station. No, it was not such a fun thing to do. Needless to add that I am behind schedule on an important goal for the year. Of course, there are the other goals that are going as planned and I had to apply the mental discipline of being grateful for where I am as I set out to track what has been helpful so far and what has not been.
Usually, I wait until the very end of the year to review how far I had come for the year but I am currently working to align with a timing that is rigid in some parts, so I have to review my progress on a quarterly basis. After completing this exercise, I took note of why this process was necessary and how useful I believed the exercise was. I carefully distilled the information and streamlined it to a shareable content that I am about to share here.
Reviewing personal goals is something that is easy to take for granted, but reviewing our goals is as important as setting them in the first place. Reviewing goals is how we establish that our goals are measurable first and foremost, if they are progressing as expected, or if something needs to change in the way we are going about it.
Reviewing goals can go in one of two or many ways. Primarily, reviewing our goals is supposed to grow our awareness of progress and strengthen us to do more. However, it can also be a mentally distressing exercise for people who are high in neuroticism, especially upon becoming aware of tough challenges and seeming impossibilities.

While there are many ways to overcome the mental block and discouragement that may show up during this exercise, it is always important to remember that every plan is perfect on paper only. Having this knowledge at the back of your mind before embarking on this exercise saves you a million worries and acts of desperation or despair.
- Tracking Progress: When you revisit your goals, you have the opportunity to track your progress. By reviewing where you stand in relation to your initial goals, you can assess what has been achieved, what needs improvement, and what adjustments are required to stay on track.
- Stay Motivated: Revisiting your goals serves as a reminder of why you set them in the first place. It reignites your motivation and helps you stay focused on the end goal. Celebrating small wins along the way can also boost morale and keep you inspired to continue working towards your objectives.
- Adapt to Changes: Life is dynamic, and circumstances can change unexpectedly. By regularly reviewing your goals, you can adapt to these changes and make necessary adjustments to your action plan. This flexibility allows you to stay agile and responsive to new opportunities or challenges that may arise.
- Improve Accountability: Revisiting and reviewing goals helps improve accountability. It holds you responsible for your progress and outcomes, as you assess whether you are taking the necessary steps to achieve your objectives. This accountability fosters a sense of ownership and commitment to your goals.
- Enhance Effectiveness: By evaluating the effectiveness of your actions and strategies in relation to your goals, you can identify what is working well and what needs improvement. This reflective process enables you to refine your approach, optimize your efforts, and ensure that you are moving closer to your desired outcomes.
In conclusion, success is not a magical effect that visits our lives out of chance. While it is possible that luck is and important factor in achieving success in life, revisiting and reviewing goals is a key practice that increases our chances of becoming lucky in life. It provides a structured framework for tracking progress, staying motivated, adapting to changes, improving accountability, and enhancing effectiveness. By incorporating regular goal reviews into your routine, you can maximize your potential for success and continuous growth in both your personal and professional endeavors.
