Dirty December

What is your favorite place to go in your city?

It’s how we celebrate the festivities, and it’s how we end the year in Nigeria.

It’s cool, then it’s not. People in the diaspora get to mingle with people back home. Promises are made, lies are told, hearts are broken, and at least a few women get to fall prey to an “I wanna gonna” brothers from the abroad.

Our Igbo brothers get to do the money spending on foods and booze. Young people from the city get to show off on their newfound wealth. It’s a season to look forward to.

I do miss being a part of the culture because I do love the beautiful display of the Ekpo and Ekpe cultures and the traditional dances.

The Calabar carnival is one of the biggest street parties in the whole of West Africa. The costumes are gorgeous. The women are beautiful. And the men are handsome too!

I don’t get to have a robust celebration out here, and I actually don’t look forward to these celebrations because they’re just not a happy celebration in this part of the world. It’s all about families pitching unhealthy competitions and displaying the best passive-aggressive behaviors possible.

I do look forward to dety December sometime soon. What’s your favorite month? Share!
