The Importance of Opinion Sorting in the Digital Age

|

We are living in an era where influencing is a means of livelihood. However, majority of the people try to trivialize the concept of being an influencer especially because we have not taken the time to carefully consider the meaning of that word and exactly what it entails. We think that such a simple word is something that is readily understood by anyone who hears it, but quite unfortunately, that is not the case.

Influencers drop (unpopular) opinions in such relatable ways to the people. The more relatable their communication style is, the more acceptable the opinion that they are attempting to propagate. People erroneously misappropriate their acceptable communication style with their sometimes unacceptable opinions, and run with the unpopular opinion as an acceptable fact. This, and various other reasons, is why it is important to learn about opinion sorting. This is a two-part article and we’ll start from the general perspective and finish with individual application of the topic.

Opinion sorting involves evaluating and categorizing opinions based on various criteria to determine their value and relevance. Here are some key criteria that can be used to assess whether an opinion is valuable:

  1. Expertise and Knowledge: The background and expertise of the individual expressing the opinion are crucial. Opinions from subject matter experts or individuals with relevant experience carry more weight. Of course, occasionally someone who is not an exert can offer a valuable opinion on a subject. But we must understand that the chances of obtaining meaningful insights from experts in the said field far outweighs the possibility of finding it in a randomly knowledgeable person.
  2. Evidence and Reasoning: Valuable opinions are often supported by evidence, data, or logical reasoning. An opinion that is backed by research, statistics, or well-articulated arguments is generally more respected. If you were to make it a habit to ask people for the evidence of their conclusions, you would be surprised at how many people are unaware of the fact that their opinions are popular but unfounded. While there are inferences that are yet to be evidently backed, it is important to look for the evidence for your opinions.
  3. Clarity and Coherence: A well-articulated opinion that is clear and coherent is easier to understand and evaluate. Opinions that are muddled or poorly expressed may be dismissed regardless of their content. This is not because the opinion is necessarily useless. The truth is that a poorly articulated opinion is a sign that the thinking processes surrounding that opinion has not yet been completed. In other words, it is a poorly thought through opinion.
  4. Relevance: The relevance of the opinion to the topic at hand is essential. An opinion that directly addresses the issue or question being discussed is more valuable than one that is tangential or unrelated. Overall, humans often do a great job at immediately identifying the relevance of an opinion. However, before dismissing an opinion as irrelevant, do your best to ensure that you have carefully examined it for abstracts which are usually not easily evident but still relevant.
  5. Balance and Consideration of Alternatives: A valuable opinion often considers multiple perspectives and acknowledges counterarguments. This demonstrates critical thinking and a comprehensive understanding of the topic. If you are handed an opinion and told that it is the most plausible or only relevant one, your duty is to reject the idea that there’s only one valid opinion to consider or act upon because it is very rare that any situation has one valid perspective to it.
  6. Originality: Unique or innovative opinions that offer new insights or perspectives can be particularly valuable, especially in fields that benefit from creative thinking. People who are capable of working with abstractions often come up with the most insightful inputs, that is why it is important to at least examine an opinion before dismissing it.
  7. Ethical Considerations: Opinions that align with ethical standards and promote positive values are often viewed as more valuable. This includes considerations of fairness, respect, and integrity. This can be tricky as many disturbing facts can get shrouded once the right of expressions come into play with ethical considerations. So tread with caution when ethical considerations are of utmost importance.
  8. Impact and Consequences: The potential impact of the opinion on individuals, communities, or broader society can also determine its value. Opinions that encourage constructive dialogue or positive change are best prioritized. One place where the impact of an opinion is most commonly ignored is on the social media, especially when the owner of the opinion has been afforded some anonymity. This makes it a continued responsibility for any sensible adult to carefully consider their engagements with certain opinions.
  9. Consistency: Consistency with established facts or widely accepted principles can enhance the credibility of an opinion. However, challenging the status quo can also be valuable if done thoughtfully. Whether in agreement or against the opinion, it is important to do so thoughtfully.
  10. Audience and Context: The audience and context in which the opinion is presented can affect its value. An opinion is more relevant or compelling in certain contexts than in others. A compelling opinion is not necessarily a relevant one especially when the context is switched.

By applying these criteria, individuals and groups can effectively sort and assess opinions to determine which ones are most valuable for discussion, decision-making, or further exploration.

In the second part of this article, we will explore how you as an individual can leverage the art of opinion sorting to liberate yourself from unnecessary mental shackles that can keep you from making the best use of your mind.

  1. Many struggle to discern an influence peddler from a leader. Although these two creatures often occupy the same domain, they are quite different. Often, the leader will get censored or silenced because they told a truth that hit a nerve. The influence peddler is part of the racket; their voice is often elevated.
