The Thrill Of Ambitious DIYs!
Describe the most ambitious DIY project you’ve ever taken on.
Hand sewn skirt with inverted pleats in the front!
Third year of junior high school and we had to choose between cooking, housekeeping or clothing and textile. As a traditional Nigerian female, your default is cooking and housekeeping, and if you had a great-grandmother and grandmother like mine, then some extras like baking, knitting, and sewing would have been passed down to your mother who would have at least satisfied your curiosity and taught you how to thread a needle, stitch minor defects in your petticoat, lace your underskirt or put in the elastic.
So when it was time to choose what part of home economics to fulfill in my junior high class, I tilted towards clothing and textile. Learning different types of stitches and materials was exciting even though I struggled with more complex stitches. When it was time to make a qualifying art, that’s when I chose to make a skirt with an inverted pleat.
I didn’t think it was an ambitious project, but my teacher did and for a good reason. Putting a waistband neatly on a pleated skirt is more work especially for a hand-sewn project! To cut the long story short, I aced that project, and that skirt was an all time favorite piece of clothing for a while.
